Robert Ranstadler Within the context of the use of small arms in linear warfare, the American Revolutionary War was a conflict dominated by the musket. His old life is dead, all he loves burned up in a tragic fire. All wore buckskins; all had the appearance of frontiersmen. He mentions the LeMat pistol, a revolver with a an extra barrel for firing a small gauge shotgun shell, which could be effective at times, but was clumsy to operate and not exactly a common gun. This book describes the adventures that he encounters on his travels west.

After growing up further, Chantry moves west with the Ferguson rifle that Major Patrick Ferguson gave him when he was a young boy. Section 2:The author tells you about four main characters at the beginning of the story to give you some background and understanding of the book. By all accounts, the Ferguson Rifle was a weapon that outperformed conventional long guns of the period in nearly every regard. The author provides facts, based off of original primary source documentation, as well as his own personal experiences with his From demonstrating his rifle in front of King George III in October,to his death at the Battle of Kings Mountain, author Tim L. In Louis L'Amour's Lost Treasures: Volumes 1, Beau L'Amour takes the reader on a guided tour through many of the finished and unfinished short stories, novels, and treatments that his father was never able to publish during his lifetime.

He received an English patent in December of number on details of the design. Most of the Ferguson rifles were subsequently boxed-up in and placed in storage. I have read a few of his other books before reading The Ferguson Rifle; however, this book amazed me and was a very good book to read. You're four days ride from a settlement, mister. The Ferguson rifle. book

There are extra evil villains, and an old mountain man that one cannot decide whose side he may or may not be on The Ferguson Rifle is recounted as an emotional catalyst for the actions and frustrations of Patrick Ferguson, and he is mentioned as speaking of the rifle in great frustration.

Shortly after returning home, Ferguson purchased a posting in the 70th Regiment of Foot under the command of his cousin, Alexander Johnstone. The story is a well-written western, set in the early west, and one I enjoyed this time around perhaps a bit less than thirty-five years ago or so when I first read it.

The first character that you are introduced to is Ronan Chantry. But even he can't know the true extent of his courage until he draws the fire of a man who will do anything -- kill anyone -- for the glitter of gold.

These postscripts tell the story behind the stories that millions of readers have come to know and cherish. Section 2:The author tells you about four main characters at the beginning of the story to give you some background and understanding of the book.

Within me is emptiness; the studies to which I had given my life, abandoned. L'amour is clear that the weapon did not have much place in the war, but all of the mountain men the hero meets are charmed by the rifle.

No real specific character traits are given about these men, other than they are very brave. Shelves: completed I read this many years ago likely upon its first release and I enjoyed the re-read. Not only did it have a nice story line, but I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of history and physical geography which were included in this book.

Ferguson 70th Regt. During the period of the mountain men, so a bit different than much of L'amours writing, but really, only a bit. This of course begs two questions. Some of the scholarly references were a bit much, I felt.

The video game Empire: Total War has a unit of "Ferguson Riflemen," which use the Ferguson rifle and are only recruitable by the British. Additionally, many beloved classics will be rereleased with an exclusive Lost Treasures postscript featuring previously unpublished material, including outlines, plot notes, and alternate drafts.

He searches the body and recovers a medallion. This book describes the adventures that he encounters on his travels west. Claims that the Ferguson Rifle later saw action during the Southern Campaign of the war are unsubstantiated, although Ferguson himself was killed in action at the Battle of Kings Mountain South Carolina on October 7, Under different circumstances the two men might have been friends.

The education I received and enriched by my own reading was an excellent one, and for a year I read law, but a meeting with Timothy Dwight convinced me I should become an educator and a writer of history.

First, what happened to the Ferguson Rifle? Main members of the group are an Irishman, Davy Shanagan, and Solomon, who by the end of the book is revealed to be very well known throughout the wilderness.

Ferguson Rifle Book Review Summary

While historians debate the merit of this claim, its likely that Ferguson could have ended the nascent uprising with the single pull of a trigger. Probably going to go questing to read the entire bibliography at some point. The rifle was given to me when I was a small boy, presented by the man who simplified the loading mechanism and put into action the most efficient weapon of the century.

All that said, this was an excellent production. A grassy slope dropped away to a cluster of trees, dark now with evening, and I thought I detected the sheen of water.

I find a few things in the story really, really far-fetched. Most read.Jun 08,  · Ferguson Rifle At best, the above observations are generalizations that, like other facets of the past, overshadow some frequently overlooked exceptions to the record. One of the most interesting of these exclusions was the Ferguson Rifle, a weapon produced in response to the American Long Rifle (another deadly anomaly that I plan to cover in a.
